Current work:
Torbjörn Jansson is a policy analyst at the AgriFood Economics Centre in Sweden. AgriFood is a collaboration between SLU (the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences) and Lund University, with the task of bridging the gap between policy making and research. His main tasks include impact analyses of changes in the common agricultural policy for different bodies in Sweden and abroad, but also to participate in research and education at the department of economics at SLU. His research focuses on development and application of simulation models.
Curriculum Vitae:
| 2009-... | Policy analyst at AgriFood Economics Centre |
| 2006-2009 | Quantitative analyst at LEI, Wageningen UR |
| 2003-2006 | Doctorate student at University of Bonn. Thesis successfully defended (Summa cum laude!) in 2007. |
| 1999-2003 | Quantitative economist at Swedish Institute for Food and Agricultural Economics (SLI), Lund, Sweden (currently on leave of absence) |
| 1999 | Assistant Master ("Biträdande adjunkt") Department for Horticultural Economics, Swedish University of Food and Agricultural Economics. During those three months I developed the horticultural economics educational tool HortGame from a German template. |
| 1999 | MSc. in Horticulture, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Alnarp) |

Here you may download the GAMS source files that are required to reproduce the simulation experiments reported in Jansson and Heckelei (2008a), "A new estimator for trade costs and its small sample properties". The usage of each file is documented with comments in the GAMS code. Here we only give a brief overview.
In order to run the estimations, you need to have GAMS installed as well as Java (virtual machine) and gnuplot (referenced below). You also need to create a directory to hold the GAMS source code, create a subdirectory called "rep" that will hold the graphics created by the program, and download the needed programs to the proper directory as described below.
The purpose of the program is to (1) generate a large number of "true but unknown" sets of parameters and data for a transportation model, (2) add disturbances to each parameter and data set, (3) estimate the parameters using the generated observations, and (4) analyse the results of the estimations.
The first three steps are done by the program generateSampleGrid.gms. In order to allow for a large sample size, the program can utilize several processors in parallell. This is described in detail in the program. Furthermore, the program uses two include files: init.gms and savesol.gms which you thus also needs to download to the same folder as the main program generateSampleGrid.gms.
The last step is performed by the program analyseSample.gms. The econometric routine requires the libinclude "rank.gms" to be installed, which should be the case with all recent GAMS systems. In order to obtain full graphical output as in the paper, the program relies on the open source software gnuplot in combination with a modified version of Tom Rutherfords GAMS utility plot.gms which you should download and put in the "inclib" directory of your GAMS installation. Finally, I couldn't get the plot quite right without manipulating the EPS graphics, which is done by the little Java program repStr.class written by me, which just replaces strings inside the EPS files generated by gnuplot. Put repStr.class in a subdirectory called "rep" to the directory where you put "analyseSample.gms". That is also where the graphics will be stored.
