Summer Symposium of the International Agricultural Trade Research
Consortium (IATRC)
Bonn, Germany, May 28 - 30, 2006
"Food Regulation and Trade: Institutional Framework, Concepts
of Analysis and Empirical Evidence"
The IATRC summer symposium in 2006 will be hosted in Bonn, Germany,
May 28 -30. The conflicts between food safety regulation at the
national level and an open international trade system are at the
forefront of the trade policy debate. How food safety issues are
dealt with in the world trading system is critical for developing
countries whose exports might be severely hampered, since they
often lack the technical, administrative and financial means to
cope with a fragmented system of national food regulations. However,
differences in food safety regulation are also prevalent between
industrial countries and increasingly have become a source of
trade policy conflicts.
The conference will address issues related to food regulation
and trade from a theoretical and empirical perspective, taking
into consideration the role of the government as well as of the
private sector in setting and adjusting food safety regulations.
More specifically, invited speakers from academic and policy
institutions around the world as well as contributors selected
from an international competitive call for papers will deal with
the following issues:
- Institutional framework of Non Tariff Barriers to trade (NTB's)
- Regional versus multinational agreements on food regulation
and trade
- Economic impact analysis of NTB's from a theoretical and empirical
perspective
- Impact of public and private food standards on developing
countries
- Standards from the consumer and producer point of view
- ...
The symposium will conclude with a round table discussion among
representatives from academia, policy, and interest groups on
the future of food regulation in view of efficiency and the need
for political consensus.
