AFECO Exkursion ins Elsass

This years´ excursion brought the AFECO master students into the beautiful Alsace. The bus left early on the 17th of May for the first destination in Manheim: John Deere. Our group got a factory tour with a special highlight. We had the chance to experience a tractor simulator with 3D glasses that John Deere uses to collect constructor’s and customer’s feedback. On the second day, we visited BASF and got some insights into crop science research. After having lunch at BASF, we got a tour through the vineyards at the wine breeding institute “Julius Kühn-Institut für Rebzüchtung” and tasted some wine made from new fungus-resistant grapevine cultivars.

In the evening, we learned more about winemaking on a cellar tour in Neustadt and attended another wine tasting. Heading for Strasbourg on the next morning, we visited a french dairy farm in Wœrth. In Strasbourg, we visited the EU parliament and got a guided city tour. During the last two days, we learned more about the cultivation of asparagus at GAEC Scharrenberger in Surbourg as well as the cultivation of hops and beer brewing at Ferme Woehl in Seebach.

On our last day of excursion before heading home to Bonn, we stopped near Lembach to see the Chateau de Fleckenstein - a ruin of a castle located on an impressive rock. We arrived in Bonn with many practical impressions about agriculture in Germany and French – especially the breeding, cultivation and production of wine will be kept in memory – as well as many fun wine tastings. Thanks to the Chair of Production Economics for organising the excursion!
